Police Investigate Repeat Arson on NYPD Vehicles

Police Investigate Repeat Arson on NYPD Vehicles

By Y.M. Lowy

For the second time in a week, an NYPD vehicle has been set on fire, raising concern among police as investigators work to determine whether the incidents are connected.

The first fire broke out last week on Dekalb Avenue, where 11 NYPD vehicles were set ablaze. Both marked and unmarked cars were destroyed, with damage estimated at more than $800,000.

Police have now identified 21-year-old Jakhi Lodgson McCray as the suspect in that case. He has previous arrests in the city, including for damaging a statue at Columbia University and resisting arrest during a protest.

Yesterday, another NYPD van was found burned on Union Avenue in Williamsburg. It had been assigned to a Transit Task Force. Investigators say a fire starter was used in this case as well, though it was a different brand from the one found in the earlier fire.

NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny called the Bushwick arson more than just an attack on police property. He said it was also an attack on the neighborhood, pointing out that several local residents suffered damage to their homes or vehicles.

So far, police say there is no direct evidence linking the two fires, but the investigation is ongoing.
