Con Edison Introduces New Battery System in Brooklyn
By Y.M. Lowy
Con Edison has installed a new battery system in Brooklyn to strengthen electric service for over 350,000 customers.
The battery can supply 5.8 megawatts of power for up to four hours, helping reduce strain on the grid during peak summer hours. The system was built on existing substation property, avoiding the need to buy land or disrupt nearby neighborhoods. It passed a full safety review by the FDNY.
Neighborhoods set to benefit include Crown Heights, Flatbush, Bushwick, East New York, Howard Beach, Ozone Park, Richmond Hill, and Woodhaven.
The battery charges overnight when electricity is cheaper, storing enough power to charge more than a million phones or run over 50,000 microwaves.
