Fines on Obscured Plates Start April 16

New York City is tightening its grip on drivers using license plates intentionally obscured to evade tolls and identification. Starting April 16, authorities will enforce strict rules requiring plates to be securely fastened, kept clean, and free from coverings like glass or plastic.

The penalty for parking with an obscured plate could result in a $50 fine. The move comes as part of Mayor Eric Adams’ push to tackle ghost cars. Since his administration began, over 73,000 ghost cars and unregistered vehicles have been removed from the streets.

If you’re driving in NYC, it’s a good idea to check your plate before you park.
