East Williamsburg Awarded $20 Million in State Revitalization Funding

By Y.M. Lowy

Governor Kathy Hochul announced that East Williamsburg has been selected to receive $20 million through New York State’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative and NY Forward programs.

The funding will support various projects that will improve the neighborhood by strengthening local businesses and enhancing public spaces.

East Williamsburg was chosen as New York City’s winner in the latest round of the state programs. Because of the unique size and density of New York City neighborhoods, the state combined funding from both programs into a single $20 million award.

During the announcement, Governor Hochul said she wants to see the funding used to help create more affordable housing and support the community’s vision for the neighborhood’s future.

The Downtown Revitalization Initiative and NY Forward programs are designed to help communities invest in downtown areas, attract economic growth, and improve quality of life for residents. To date, the state has committed more than $1.4 billion through the two programs.

Local leaders will now work to develop specific projects that will receive funding as part of the East Williamsburg award.
