BREAKING: Mayor Adams Orders Removal of Controversial Bedford Avenue Bike Lane in Williamsburg
By Williamsburg 365 Staff
In a major development following repeated safety concerns and community pushback, Mayor Eric Adams has announced that the city will remove the current design of the Bedford Avenue bike lane in Williamsburg and restore it to its original configuration.
The announcement comes after a series of troubling incidents, some involving children, raised alarms about the safety of the redesigned lane. Community leaders and local residents had voiced their concerns for months, pointing out that the current setup created dangerous conditions for pedestrians, especially in an area with heavy foot traffic and families with young children.
“Bike lanes are a crucial part of our city’s infrastructure, and we’ve been clear that they must be implemented as best as possible to fit community needs,” Mayor Adams said in a statement released Friday afternoon.
He continued, “After several incidents — including some involving children — on a section of the Bedford Avenue bike lane in Williamsburg, Department of Transportation Commissioner Rodriguez and I listened to community concerns and decided to adjust the current design to better reflect community feedback.”
The Mayor emphasized that the change is being made in the interest of public safety and to restore trust between the city and local communities.
“In doing so,” Adams stated, “the city will restore the original configuration of the Bedford bike lane between Willoughby Street and Flushing Avenue, while maintaining existing intersection daylighting treatments to protect pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists alike, and ensuring that pedestrians and cyclists can move safely around the neighborhood.”
This move marks a rare rollback of a bike lane project in the city. Williamsburg residents had consistently flagged the redesigned bike lane as hazardous, and many are now expressing relief that their concerns have been heard.
Further details on the exact timeline for the redesign's reversal have not yet been announced.
