New Yorkers Turn Out Early as Primary Race Heats Up
By Y.M. Lowy
New Yorkers showed strong interest in this year’s primary election, with more than 30,000 people casting their ballots on the first day of early voting. That’s nearly twice as many as the first day of early voting in 2021.
Early voting began on Shabbos and will run through June 22. The primary election is on June 24, when voters will help decide the city’s next mayor, as well as other positions like comptroller, public advocate, and City Council members.
As of the second day, Manhattan got 21,565 votes, Bronx 5,170, Brooklyn 23,637, Queens 13,823 and Staten Island 2,166.
The mayor’s race is drawing more attention by the day. A new poll shows Zohran Mamdani slightly ahead of former Governor Andrew Cuomo. Cuomo had been in the lead for months, but the latest numbers suggest the race is tightening.
