Trash Trouble in Williamsburg: New Laws Bring Fines for Early Put-Outs

By Idy Perl

Don’t take out the garbage just yet… check the time first or you might get fined. Yes, for real.

Over the last few days, multiple Williamsburg residents reported getting summons because they had trash out before 8PM.

Unbeknown to many residents, back in April new laws were introduced regarding the put-out time for trash bags and bins in front of residential buildings in NYC.  The laws were passed without proper communication with community members, which is why many are upset and confused as to why they’re suddenly getting tickets for simply putting out the trash.

The new laws are as follows:

• Garbage that is in bins with secure covers can only be placed outside between 6PM-12AM the night before collection.

• Garbage bags that are not in bins can only be placed outside between 8PM-12AM the night before collection.

Residents that place garbage outside before those times can be fined up to $300.
