New Anti-Hate Curriculum Launched In Public Schools
By Idy Perl
To counter the rising violence and hate, especially antisemitism, a new curriculum was formed that will be taught in public middle schools to combat hate. The curriculum will be launched in NYC schools in communities with diverse populations and where antisemitic attacks have occurred.
Local community leaders came together to craft this curriculum, which comprehensively discusses discrimination, hate, and diversity. Some of the creators of the curriculum have worked and spoken with perpetrators of hate crimes, who say that they often didn’t know what a hateful symbol meant or why a certain phrase was hurtful towards a community.
Council Member Lincoln Restler wrote yesterday on X: "In response to the disturbing rise in hate violence in our community and across the City - especially anti-Semitism - we crafted a new curriculum to engage young people at our middle schools to combat hate."
"We recently launched this new curriculum at IS 71 and IS 318 in South Williamsburg and IS 157 in Bed Stuy - near where many anti-Semitic incidents have occurred."
Bringing this curriculum to children and teens will hopefully open a conversation that encourages them to appreciate our individual histories and cultures while fostering unity between communities.
