Today: FDNY Commissioner Laura Kavanagh's Final Day

Today marks the last day on the job for the FDNY's 34th Commissioner, Laura Kavanagh.

Commissioner Kavanagh, who announced a few weeks ago that she would be stepping down from her role, has been a trailblazer as the first female Fire Commissioner in the FDNY, holding the position since 2022.

Her tenure has been marked by significant challenges and controversies. Several former fire chiefs sued Kavanagh, alleging age discrimination after they were dismissed from their positions. Additionally, she has faced criticism over increased emergency response times during her administration.

Today, the FDNY thanked her for her service in a tweet: "Commissioner Kavanagh is the first woman to run the Department in its 159-year history. We thank her for her decade of dedicated service and wish her the best."

As Kavanagh steps down, the department looks ahead to new leadership and the continuation of its mission to protect and serve New Yorkers.
