Street Near Williamsburg Renamed to Honor Detective Scooter Joe
By Y.M. Lowy
A street near Williamsburg was renamed today to honor Detective Joseph Willins, better known as Scooter Joe.
Scooter Joe was a true hero in Bed-Stuy, remembered for solving 20 to 30 murders during his career. He fiercely protected the neighborhood and earned deep respect from the community.
In the 1960s through the 1980s, Scooter Joe and his longtime partner, Officer Kenneth Kaufman, kept Bed-Stuy safer by stopping violent crime. Their work set an example that still guides law enforcement and community efforts today.
To honor his memory, the city officially renamed the street near Williamsburg as Joseph “Scooter Joe” Willins Way, ensuring his name and legacy will not be forgotten.
