Rare Whale Sighting In The East River
By Idy Perl
Wildfires, snowstorms in November… New York has had its share of unusual natural occurrences lately, and now some rare wildlife is making an appearance as well.
On Monday, pedestrians at the East River near the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges spotted a whale flashing its tail in the water not too far from the shore.
A Coast Guard spokesperson said that they weren’t sure if it was a humpback whale or a North Atlantic right whale, which is an endangered species. Whichever it is, spotting a whale near Brooklyn is a rare occurrence since the boat traffic usually keeps whales far away.
The Coast Guard warned boaters to watch out for the whale to avoid collisions in the water.
