NYC Stops Giving Composting Fines
By Y.M. Lowy
The city’s composting rules have been getting attention lately, whether through Williamsburg365 or one of those flyers in your mailbox. But for now, most fines are being put on pause.
Composting has been required since October, but fines only started on April 1. Over 4,000 tickets were given in just two weeks, and more people started following the rules.
Large buildings that get warned several times can still be fined $100, but most places won’t face penalties this year.
Even though the fines are on hold, the composting rules are still in effect. Last week, the city picked up nearly 4 million pounds of compost, and the amount keeps growing. The fines are expected to return in 2026.
