NYC Launches New Office to Overhaul Curb Management and Reduce Street Congestion

City officials have announced the creation of a new Office of Curb Management within the Department of Transportation, aimed at improving street safety and bringing order to curbside use across New York City.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the new office will take a more coordinated approach to managing the city’s roughly 6,300 miles of streets and millions of curbside parking spaces, addressing growing demands on limited space.

Officials say the initiative is designed to reduce double parking, expand loading zones, and better organize curb use for a wide range of needs, including deliveries, outdoor dining, bike parking, and waste container placement.

The new office will also focus on improving coordination between city agencies, consolidating planning efforts that were previously spread across multiple teams.

Transportation officials noted that curb regulations have not kept pace with how streets are used today, contributing to congestion and safety concerns. The updated approach is expected to modernize curbside management and support more efficient traffic flow.

The effort builds on recent city initiatives aimed at improving street design and accessibility, with a broader goal of making streets safer and more functional for pedestrians, cyclists, drivers, and businesses alike.

The Department of Transportation is expected to begin staffing the new office immediately, with leadership roles to be announced in the coming days.
