No More Folding Strollers on City Busses: MTA Expands Program Citywide

The MTA is expanding its open stroller pilot program across the entire New York City bus system, allowing parents and caregivers to board buses without folding their strollers.

Under the expanded program, every city bus will include a designated area where an unfolded stroller can be placed while the bus is in motion.

The change removes the previous requirement that adults take children out of their strollers and fold them before boarding. The policy had made bus travel difficult for many parents, particularly those traveling alone with young children.

The MTA first launched the open stroller pilot program in 2023 on a limited number of buses. Officials announced Thursday that the program will now be expanded throughout the city.

Brooklyn State Senator Andrew Gounardes said accessibility on buses should include not only passengers with limited mobility, but also those traveling with strollers, shopping carts, and similar items.

The MTA said funding provided by New York State helped make the citywide expansion possible.
