DEP Conducting Dye Test in Newtown Creek Near Greenpoint
Residents near Newtown Creek, including those in nearby Williamsburg, may notice brightly colored water as the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) conducts a scheduled dye test.
According to the DEP, the testing is taking place in the Greenpoint and Long Island City sections of Newtown Creek. The dye may be visible in the immediate vicinity of the Greenpoint and Long Island City shorelines.
Officials emphasized that the dye is non-toxic, environmentally safe, and will quickly dissipate in the water. The test is part of routine operations and is not related to a hazardous spill or contamination event.
Anyone who observes unusual coloring in the creek during the testing period should be aware that it is expected and poses no risk to the public or the environment.
