Mamdani Gains Notable Share of Votes in Williamsburg, the Only Orthodox Jewish Neighborhood to Show Such Results
By M. C. Millman
In an unusual outcome for one of New York City’s most unified voting blocs, Zohran Mamdani gained a measurable share of votes in Williamsburg — the Satmar stronghold known for its high turnout and consistent voting patterns.
Williamsburg voters turned out in impressive numbers for Tuesday’s election, delivering 64.1 percent of the vote (5,887 votes) to Andrew Cuomo, while Mamdani captured 33.5 percent (3,076 votes) and Curtis Sliwa received 2.5 percent (232 votes).
This outcome made Williamsburg the only major Hasidic neighborhood in New York City where Mamdani received a notable portion of the vote — a development viewed by political observers as both surprising and historically significant.
The neighborhood’s civic leadership, including Rabbi Moishe Indig, a key figure in the community known for driving strong voter turnout, helped secure Mamdani's commanding margin.
