Dangerous Flooding Expected Across NYC as Officials Issue Dire Warning
New York City Emergency Management is urging residents to prepare for the possibility of significant rainfall and dangerous flash flooding beginning Sunday and continuing into Monday, with the greatest concern for those living in basement apartments.
Forecasters are calling for 2 to 3 inches of rain across the city, with rainfall rates of up to 2 inches per hour and isolated areas potentially seeing even heavier downpours. Rapid flooding of streets, underpasses, highways, and basements is possible.
Officials are advising residents of basement apartments to be prepared to move to higher ground or a higher floor if flooding develops. Flooded basements can become life threatening within minutes, and New Yorkers are urged to never enter or remain in a flooded basement.
