Construction For Protected Bike Lanes On Bedford Ave Begins
By Idy Perl
DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez announced today construction for a 1.5-mile-long protected bike lane will begin this week on Bedford Ave between Dean Street and Flushing Avenue.
The protected bike lanes are part of a project to improve the safety of bicyclists and pedestrians on the road. In addition to the bike lanes, new pedestrian islands and additional loading zones on the curb will reduce long crossing distances, improve visibility, and keep pedestrians safe.
“The addition of a parking-protected bike lane on Bedford Avenue will create a critical cycling link in an area where bicycle ridership is booming, while making the road safer for everyone—whether you’re walking, biking, or traveling by car,” NYC DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez said. “The city has conducted thorough outreach along the corridor and looks forward to completing the project this year."
This announcement comes after Keith Bray, the Brooklyn Borough Commissioner of the Department of Transportation, conducted a walk-through of Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg to discuss safety measures for the Bedford Avenue bike lane. He was joined by prominent community leaders, including Rabbi Moishe Indig of the WJCC, representatives from the UJO, officials from the Mayor's office, business owners, and local residents, as reported on Williamsburg365.
