Complaints Arise Over Poor Translation of Drone Warnings During NYC Storm
By Williamsburg 365 Staff
In response to the heavy rain and potential flash flooding in New York City, the use of drones equipped with loudspeakers to broadcast warnings was a significant first step in emergency preparedness, as reported yesterday.
However, many residents are now claiming that the translations provided through the drones were worse than those from Google Translate, leading to confusion and a lack of understanding of the warnings.
Residents in various neighborhoods, especially those with high non-English speaking populations, reported that the warnings were often unintelligible and lacked clarity. "The words were jumbled, and it was hard to understand what they were trying to say," said one Brooklyn resident. "Any person with basic language skills could have done a better job."
As New York City continues to innovate in its approach to emergency management, the need for effective communication remains paramount
