After A Stunning Show Last Night, Northern Lights Could Be Visible Again Tonight
By Y.M. Lowy
The Northern Lights made a rare appearance over New York last night, visible across several states. The lights were visible even as close as Monsey. There’s a good chance they’ll return stronger tonight, and if skies stay clear, you might just catch a glimpse of the glowing colors lighting up the northern United States this week.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), a strong geomagnetic storm continues to push the auroral “viewline” just north of New York. If it strengthens, people in upstate New York could see the lights low on the horizon.
Last night’s display came from a powerful solar eruption that sent a cloud of magnetized plasma, called a coronal mass ejection, straight toward Earth. The result was a vibrant show of green, pink, and purple light rippling through the night sky.
NOAA’s latest forecast includes a G4 (severe) geomagnetic storm watch for tonight, meaning auroras could reach farther south than usual.
If you don’t want to drive far, you might still be able to see a faint glow from the city. But if you’re up for a short trip to a darker area nearby, it’s worth stepping outside around midnight and looking up.
If you missed the Northern Lights last night, tonight might be your chance. Find a dark spot, let your eyes adjust, and take a moment to look out for one of nature’s most beautiful sights.
