Yet Another Bird Flu Outbreak Reported in NY
By Y.M. Lowy
A bird flu outbreak has led to the death of 150 more birds at a live poultry market in Queens. This marks the first case in New York City since early February when over 1,000 birds were infected. Bird markets in NYC, Long Island, and Westchester were closed for a week for cleaning and disinfection after cases were discovered during routine inspections in Queens, the Bronx, and Brooklyn.
These new cases come after the Governor lifted restrictions on February 22nd. Although no human cases have been reported and the public threat remains low, the virus has led to the slaughter of over 166 million birds nationwide, including 30 million hens since January.
