Williamsburg365 Post Turns Bedford Bike Lane Into Campaign Issue and Headline
By Williamsburg 365 Staff
The video showing the young girl struck by an e-bike riding along the bike lane posted on Williamsburg365’s X platform quickly went viral. Major news outlets like Daily Mail, NY Post, Sky News, and more picked up the story, bringing desperately needed attention to safety concerns around Bedford Avenue’s bike lane.
Also bringing the issue into the spotlight, it has become a point of contention in the heated election debate between City Councilmember Lincoln Restler and his Democratic primary challenger, Sabrina Gates, and NYC Mayor Eric Adams and Curtis Sliwa.
Councilman Lincoln Restler shared the video and called on the Department of Transportation to add safety measures tailored to the community’s needs, saying, “I’ve been on the record repeatedly urging the Department of Transportation to make significant safety enhancements and expand outreach on Bedford to improve safety for all.”
As reported, NYC Mayor Eric Adams publicly criticized Councilman Lincoln Restler, who posted our clip, stating on X: “Let’s be clear, Lincoln Restler never called for modifying or removing the protected bike lane on Bedford Avenue.” The Mayor added, “We’re reviewing the proposals brought forward by local residents and will have an update soon,” referencing his visit to the neighborhood last week.
The tweet has already garnered around 100,000 views and gone viral in political circles. This issue, long raised by locals but met with little proactive response, has finally received the attention it deserves, making headlines and gaining urgency.
Now, let’s hope this spotlight leads to real results, and that the “talk” finally turns into action, with solutions that reflect what the community truly wants.
