Upcoming Closures On The Staten Island Bound BQE

Upcoming Closures On The Staten Island Bound BQE

By Idy Perl

NYC Department of Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez announced today that a small stretch of the Staten Island bound BQE will only have one-lane traffic for two consecutive weekends, September 14-16 and September 21-23. The closures will begin at 1AM on Saturday and go until 5AM on Monday.

The second weekend, from September 21-23, the Sands Street Entrance Ramp to the Staten Island bound roadway will be closed as well.

The closure is due to the installation of weigh-in-motion (WIM) equipment that keeps overweight vehicles off the highway.

“Weigh-in-motion technology has proven successful along the BQE in areas where it’s installed, leading to a 64 percent reduction in overweight vehicles along the triple cantilever,” said NYC DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez. “These limited lane closures are necessary for us to continue to keep overweight trucks off the BQE.”
