Two Men Killed in Collision on Queensboro Bridge Bike Path

Two men were killed after a collision between a motorized scooter and a bicycle on the Queensboro Bridge bike path, just north of Williamsburg, according to the NYPD. 

Police said the crash occurred during the morning commute at around 8:30 a.m. on the bridge’s bike lane connecting Queens and Manhattan. Investigators said a 39-year-old man riding a stand-up motorized scooter and a 35-year-old bicyclist were traveling in opposite directions when they collided head-on. 

EMS rushed both men to a nearby hospital, where they were pronounced dead. Authorities later identified the victims as Francis Del Valle of New Jersey and Dmytro Stechenko of Queens. 

The NYPD’s Collision Investigation Squad is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. The incident has also renewed concerns among cyclists and transportation advocates about speeding and the growing presence of high-powered scooter devices on New York City’s bridge bike paths. 

The Queensboro Bridge is one of the busiest cycling crossings in the city, carrying thousands of riders each day between Queens and Manhattan.
