Suspect Arrested for Torching NYPD Vehicles in Williamsburg
By Y.M. Lowy
A 21-year-old man accused of setting multiple NYPD vehicles on fire in Williamsburg last month has been arrested. Jakhi Lodgson-McCray was taken into custody after a negotiated surrender. Police had been searching for him since last month, when he allegedly climbed over a gate near Dekalb Avenue and Central Avenue and set fire to multiple NYPD cars.
According to investigators, Lodgson-McCray used fire starters on windshields, hoods, and tires. Eleven cars were damaged before he took off, changing his clothes as he ran to avoid being recognized.
The NYPD had offered a $30,000 reward for information leading to his arrest and conviction. He’s also wanted for another strange incident, where he allegedly disguised himself as a student at Columbia University and caused damage on campus.
Investigators say the arrest closes a troubling case of targeted attacks on law enforcement property, and charges are expected to be formally filed in the coming days.
