By Y.M. Lowy
A red-tailed hawk has been frequently spotted around the Harrison Avenue and Union Avenue area in Williamsburg, drawing both fascination and caution from locals.
Known for its distinctive rust-colored tail, the hawk has been seen soaring overhead and perching on rooftops.
This species of hawks is the most common in North America. The population of these birds has increased considerably in the past 30 years, The increase is likely due to reduced use of rodent poison. They hunt pigeons, rats, and squirrels and generally stay far from people if unprovoked.
