President Trump Targets NYC Bike Lanes and Congestion Pricing
By Y.M. Lowy
President Donald Trump has announced plans to pressure New York to end Manhattan’s congestion pricing program. He said he may use the federal Department of Transportation to cut funding or review the toll program. Trump also criticized the city’s bike lanes, saying they cause traffic problems and are dangerous for people walking.
“They should get rid of the bike lanes and the sidewalks in the middle of the street,” Trump said. “These bikes go 20 miles an hour. They’re hitting people.”
Congestion pricing is meant to reduce traffic and help pay for public transportation improvements. However, Trump said it hurts businesses because fewer people are driving into Manhattan. He believes the city should focus on making the subway cleaner and safer instead.
The president said he hopes to reach a deal with Governor Kathy Hochul to resolve the issue.
