Open Gangway Cars Coming To G Line
By Idy Perl
MTA officials announced today their plans to add more open gangway cars to the G line.
These cars don’t have doors between the cars and allow passengers to move around more freely and easily. It will provide more much-needed space in the often cramped subway cars.
Twenty of those modern cars were first purchased last year and added to the C line. In 2025 10 of those cars will be transferred to the G line and will make up two of the 5-car Crosstown Line trains.
This Wednesday the MTA board is set to approve the purchase of 80 additional open gangway cars. This is part of a bigger $1.3 billion order of 435 new train cars which is expected to be purchased and delivered by 2028.
“As any G train rider knows, these new train cars will go a long way to making for a better ride,” Lisa Daglian, executive director for the Permanent Citizens Advisory Committee to the MTA said. “The open gangways are as unique as the G itself, and we're looking forward to a better Queens/Brooklyn ride.”
