NYPD Investigating after Multiple Individuals Seen Entering and Exiting Williamsburg Sewer System on Consecutive Mornings

By GY

Williamsburg Shomrim confirmed two separate incidents involving a group of individuals entering and exiting New York City’s underground sewer system on consecutive mornings in Williamsburg.

On Thursday morning, three individuals were observed emerging from a manhole at Bedford Avenue and Lynch Street before being picked up by a white van. It remains unclear where the group initially entered the underground system, though Williamsburg Shomrim believes they likely did not enter from within Williamsburg.

A second incident occurred early Friday morning. At approximately 1:00 a.m., a group of seven individuals was seen entering a manhole at Bedford Avenue and Heyward Street. Williamsburg Shomrim witnessed the activity and immediately notified the NYPD. The group later exited from a manhole at Bedford Avenue and Lynch Street at approximately 3:30 a.m., where a white van picked them up and departed the area.

The incidents prompted a significant response Friday afternoon from the NYPD Emergency Service Unit and the New York City Department of Environmental Protection. Authorities entered the underground system to inspect the area and ensure there were no public safety concerns. No immediate hazards were discovered.

In a statement provided to Williamsburg 365, a DEP spokesperson said:

“DEP has inspected the sewer infrastructure at this location and found no damage to the system. DEP works closely with our public safety partners to help ensure the safety and security of critical infrastructure throughout New York City. Entering the sewer system is both illegal and extremely dangerous. Sewers can contain numerous hazards, including noxious and potentially deadly gases, unstable surfaces, flooding risks, and confined spaces. For these reasons, members of the public should never enter a pipe, drain, catch basin, manhole, or outfall.”

The circumstances surrounding the group’s actions and their purpose for entering the underground system remain under investigation.
