NYCHA Investigating Possible Asbestos Release at Two Marcy Houses Buildings After Steam Leak
Residents of two buildings at the Marcy Houses are being offered hotel accommodations paid for by NYCHA as the authority investigates a possible release of asbestos following a steam leak.
Asbestos is a material once commonly used in insulation because it resists heat and fire. When damaged, it can release tiny fibers into the air. Breathing those fibers can cause serious lung disease, including cancer, often years later.
In a notice dated October 28 and addressed to residents of 502 and 504 Marcy Avenue, NYCHA said it is "actively investigating a possible release of asbestos" due to the leak.
Out of an abundance of caution, NYCHA is offering hotel accommodations for the next two days, with all expenses paid by the authority. Relocation is optional but "highly recommended," according to the notice.
Residents who choose to remain are asked to keep their windows closed and allow NYCHA access when needed.
According to the notice, NYCHA representatives are at the Property Management office at 648 Park Avenue until 9:00 PM to coordinate hotel arrangements and gift cards. After 9:00 PM, residents are directed to call the Customer Contact Center at (718) 707-7771.
"NYCHA is committed to the safety of all residents and will provide updates as they become available," the notice states.
