NYC Congestion Pricing Working Well After Six Months

Six months passed since New York City began charging drivers to enter Manhattan below 60th Street. The congestion pricing program was aimed at reducing traffic and raising money for public transit and officials say it’s working.

According to Governor Kathy Hochul and the MTA, traffic in the toll zone is down 11%, with about 67,000 fewer vehicles entering each day. That adds up to 10 million fewer cars in the area since the program began. Delays have dropped across the city, with Waze data showing traffic is moving better in Manhattan. Crashes and injuries in the zone are also down.

The tolls are expected to bring in $500 million this year. That money will help the MTA move forward with $15 billion in upgrades, including new subway cars and signals, station elevators, and improvements to the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North.
