New Sanitation Garage Opens in Williamsburg After Decades in the Making
By Y.M. Lowy
After years of planning and construction, a major new Sanitation Department garage officially opened today right here in Williamsburg.
The new facility, located at 559 Park Avenue, will serve Brooklyn Community District 3, covering Bedford-Stuyvesant and surrounding areas. For locals, this is something that’s been in the works for a long time — more than 25 years.
The 220,000-square-foot garage is now up and running, giving NYC Sanitation a centralized hub for operations in the area. It will house 68 sanitation trucks along with about 120 workers, and includes space for repairs, storage, and offices all under one roof.
City officials were on hand this morning for the ribbon cutting, including DSNY commissioner Gregory Anderson, Deputy Mayor for Operations Julia Kerson, and local Council Members Chi Ossé and Lincoln Restler.
This will become a more modern and organized base for sanitation services that many residents rely on every day.
