New Pedestrian Island Added at Lee and Wallabout Intersection

New Pedestrian Island Added at Lee and Wallabout Intersection

By Y.M. Lowy

A small but important safety upgrade has been made at one of the busier crossings in Williamsburg.

The city recently installed a pedestrian island in the middle of the intersection at Lee Avenue and Wallabout Street intersection, a five-way junction that sees steady foot and vehicle traffic throughout the day.

The new island gives pedestrians a place to pause safely while crossing, instead of having to make the entire crossing in one stretch. At an intersection with multiple crossing angles and turning vehicles, that extra space can make a real difference.

Residents in the area are familiar with how busy and sometimes confusing this intersection can get, especially during peak hours. The addition is aimed at slowing down traffic slightly and giving pedestrians better visibility and protection.
