New Migrant Shelter Opens In Williamsburg
By Idy Perl
A new shelter for migrants has quietly opened in Williamsburg and is set to become one of NYC’s largest shelters.
The shelter, which is housed in the vacant buildings at 47 Hall Street, will accommodate around 2,000 migrants, though the number is expected to rise if circumstances call for it. The new shelter will house mostly adults in order to free up space in the Roosevelt Hotel in Manhattan, which is needed for migrants with young children.
Local residents, who aren’t consulted about such decisions in their neighborhoods, will be forced to deal with the fallout of such a large migrant facility. As residents watch the new shelter take place, they continue wondering if the city cares more about its legal residents or unknown, illegal, non-contributing migrants.
