A newly redesigned playground has opened at P.S. 380 between Lynch and Middleton streets, bringing updated play areas, a synthetic turf field and additional greenery to the neighborhood.
Council Member Lincoln Restler allocated $800,000 toward the schoolyard project, helping make the improvements possible. Restler said the new space would serve local students and neighbors while helping address chronic flooding in South Williamsburg.
The project was developed by the Trust for Public Land in partnership with the city’s Department of Environmental Protection, the School Construction Authority and local partners.
The playground features accessible equipment designed for children of all abilities, including sensory and music panels, ramps and a quiet retreat area that also serves as a climbing feature.
Dozens of trees were added, and paved surfaces were replaced with greenery to provide more shade. The new turf field is designed to capture up to 550,000 gallons of stormwater annually, helping reduce street flooding and sewer overflows during heavy rain.
A ribbon-cutting was held on September 28. The space serves students during school hours and is available to the community outside school hours, providing an upgraded outdoor space for more than 53,000 residents living within a 10-minute walk.
