New Bus Lane on Marcy Avenue Sparks Concerns Over Parking Impact

By Y.M. Lowy

The new bus lane installed on Marcy Avenue is raising questions about if the project was planned properly.

The New York City Department of Transportation and the MTA recently completed a three-block bus lane stretching between Marcy Avenue and Broadway to improve bus service for the estimated 30,000 daily riders by reducing delays along one of the neighborhood’s busiest corridors.

As part of the redesign, parking was removed from one side of the affected blocks. Additional spaces on the opposite side were converted into loading zones.

The changes have raised concern among some residents, who say parking in the area was already extremely limited and continues to shrink as new residential buildings are added.

The intersection of Marcy Avenue and Broadway, where multiple lanes merge into a single flow of traffic, is considered one of the key congestion points in the corridor.

Many residents are pointing out that the rollout reflects a lack of coordination with local parking demand and neighborhood growth, questioning whether the trade-offs were fully considered before implementation.
