MTA Tries New Gates to Stop Fare Evasion

By Y.M. Lowy
The MTA is testing new fare gates at 20 stations in New York City. Starting this fall, four different types of gates will be tested to see which ones work best. This move is part of the MTA’s efforts to stop fare evasion.
The subway has been working for a long time to fix the issue of fare evasion, trying many different approaches along the way. From increasing police enforcement to testing new technology, the MTA has been exploring every option to stop people from skipping fares.
Despite these efforts, crime is only down 10% compared to last year.
