MTA Expands Fare Checks on Buses as OMNY Enforcement Grows
By Y.M. Lowy
The MTA is moving ahead with a major change to how bus fares are enforced, bringing a long-discussed “European-style” system to more routes.
Under the updated approach, civilian fare enforcement teams, known as EAGLE teams, will now be equipped with handheld devices that can verify whether riders paid using OMNY, the tap-and-go system. This means passengers who use a phone, credit card, or OMNY card should be ready to show proof of payment if asked.
Until now, these checks were mainly limited to Select Bus Service routes, where off-board fare payment is standard. On local buses, enforcement teams largely relied on watching passengers board to see if they paid. With the new devices, they will now be able to confirm payment digitally, even after a rider has taken a seat.
This is to address ongoing fare evasion, especially at the rear doors of buses, where riders sometimes enter without paying. By expanding this system, the MTA hopes to create a more consistent and effective way to ensure fares are paid.
Riders who still use coins or MetroCards will also see increased outreach, as the agency continues shifting toward OMNY as its primary payment system.
