Mayor Zohran Mamdani stopped by the bike path entrance to the Williamsburg Bridge as NYC DOT crews worked to smooth out a long complained about bump that cyclists face when entering the bridge.

Mamdani said the Williamsburg Bridge is a route he has biked many times himself. He described the repair as a small but important step, adding that bigger street safety improvements are on the way.

“We’ve said time and time again that in this administration, there will be no problem too big to take on and no problem too small for us to focus on,” the mayor said.

The mayor even picked up a shovel and helped scoop some cement alongside DOT workers as the repair got underway.

Newly appointed DOT Commissioner Mike Flynn also spoke at the site, saying that small fixes like this can make a real difference in people’s everyday lives. He noted that this area is especially important because of how heavily it is used. About 8,600 cyclists cross the Williamsburg Bridge every day, making it the busiest bike bridge in the city.

This repair is just the beginning. DOT is preparing to launch a $70 million redesign of Delancey Street and the bridge landing, aimed at creating safer bike routes, improving pedestrian safety, and turning the area into a more welcoming public space.
