Mayor Visits Williamsburg, Stands with Children After Judge Blocks Return to Original Bike Lane
Mayor Eric Adams visited Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg today to speak directly with local children and families, just one day after a judge blocked the city’s plan to restore the bike lane to its original layout the community had safely used for years.
The mayor had approved the removal of the newly installed protected bike lane and intended to return the street to the design that had long worked for Williamsburg. That plan was scheduled to begin this week, until a Brooklyn judge issued a temporary restraining order on Tuesday, halting the changes.
The community had raised repeated concerns about the current bike lane, which parents and schools say has caused confusion and directly led to children being struck by cyclists, leaving several injured in recent months.
One parent who attended the visit said:
“The mayor has been the strongest ally fighting for public safety in our community — especially now with this bike lane crisis.”
Despite the court order, the mayor’s visit signaled that the city is not backing down. Further action is expected as the case returns to court in August.
