Mayor Adams Press Conference Regarding Commissioner Caban’s Resignation

By Idy Perl

Mayor Adams delivered a virtual press conference regarding NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban’s resignation.

“I was as surprised as you to learn of these inquires and I take them extremely seriously,” Adams said about the ongoing federal investigation into Caban’s conduct. “A short time ago I accepted the resignation of NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban. He concluded that this is the best decision at this time.”

Adams went on to list of some Caban’s accomplishments, especially in regard to the decrease in crime. During his time in office NYC had more than 18,000 illegal guns removed from the streets, the lowest recorded number of robberies in October, and the lowest number of shootings above-ground ever recorded in August.

To prioritize the safety of New Yorkers, Adams took immediate action and appointed an interim NYPD commissioner, Tom Donlon.

Donlon has served in local, state, federal, and international law enforcement roles, including as the FBI’s Chief of the National Threat Center’s Section, Assistant Special Agent for the FBI’s New York Counterterrorism Division, New York’s Director of Office of Homeland Security, and has been an agent on the task force of several large terror attack investigations, such as the 1993 World Trade Center bombing investigation.

“Tom joins the team at 1 Police Plaza that is relentlessly dedicated to public safety and protecting New Yorkers. That is why New York City is the safest big city, and will continue to be,” Mayor Adams said. “I thank incoming commissioner Donlon for stepping in during this critical moment. As always, the men and women of the NYPD have my gratitude for their dedication and professionalism.”
