Mayor Adams’ Plan Brings Full-Time Cleaning to NYC Parks

By Y.M. Lowy

Mayor Eric Adams is putting millions of dollars into keeping New York City cleaner. A big part of this plan is making sure litter baskets across the city are emptied more often. For the first time, this funding is permanent, so these services will not depend on year-to-year decisions. By 2028, the city will spend 31 million dollars every year just on litter basket pick-ups.

Another part of the plan focuses on parks. Prospect Park is part of the 121 parks that are now getting full-time staff to clean during evenings and weekends. In the past, park cleaning mostly happened on weekdays, and extra shifts were only covered through overtime or temporary workers. With this new setup, the park will stay cleaner during busy hours, and bathrooms will stay open longer.

The plan also includes cleaning vacant lots, sidewalks, and tricky spots like underpasses and stairways. The goal is to make New York City neighborhoods cleaner and reduce trash and rats in all five boroughs.
