Mayor Adams Announces Over 3,000 Illegal Guns Removed From the NYC Streets
By Y.M. Lowy
Back in March, Williamsburg365 reported that Mayor Eric Adams and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced the removal of 1,000 illegal guns from city streets since the start of 2025. Now, that number has passed 3,000.
Since Mayor Adams took office in January 2022, the NYPD has taken over 22,700 illegal guns off the streets, some even in and around Williamsburg, as you might have seen posted on our status. This effort has helped bring shootings down by 54 percent and homicides down by 36 percent across the city.
Much of the success comes from the NYPD’s focus on violent gangs. So far this year, police have carried out 48 gang takedowns, arrested 347 suspected gang members and associates, and recovered 236 more firearms in the process.
