Heat Advisory in Effect Through Sunday As Severe Heat Returns to New York City

YSR.

New York City is facing another stretch of severe summer heat beginning Thursday, with a Heat Advisory remaining in effect through Sunday as high temperatures and heavy humidity push heat index values near or above 100 degrees.

Thursday is expected to be hazy, hot, and humid, with temperatures reaching around 89 degrees in the city. The combination of heat and humidity could make it feel between 100 and 104 degrees, with scattered showers possible toward the evening.

Similar conditions are expected Friday, when temperatures are forecast to reach around 90 degrees. Heat index values could once again climb to between 100 and 104 degrees, while showers and thunderstorms may develop during the evening.

Hot and humid weather is expected to continue through Saturday and Sunday, with heat index values making it feel close to 100 degrees throughout the weekend.

Forecasters warned that the humidity will also prevent much relief during the overnight hours, making it harder for the body to cool down. Residents are being urged to spend time in air-conditioned locations, stay hydrated, and check on elderly relatives, children, and others who may be especially vulnerable to extreme heat.

Cooling centers will be available across New York City, with some surrounding communities opening libraries and other air-conditioned municipal buildings for the public.

Officials are also warning residents to watch for symptoms of heat exhaustion, including heavy sweating, cold or clammy skin, headaches, muscle cramps, dizziness, low energy, and nausea. More serious symptoms such as confusion, hot and dry skin, trouble breathing, vomiting, or a fast pulse could indicate heat stroke and require immediate medical attention.

People with underlying health conditions, particularly asthma, COPD, and other breathing-related illnesses, may face a greater risk during the prolonged heat.

The rising temperatures could also affect air travel. Extreme heat makes the air thinner, which can make it more difficult for aircraft to generate enough lift and engine power during takeoff. Airlines may sometimes need to reduce weight by limiting cargo, fuel, or passengers, potentially causing delays even when skies appear clear.
