A Shomrim patrol led to the arrest of an armed suspect after a member observed suspicious activity and quickly alerted authorities.
At around 2:15 p.m. Thursday afternoon, a Shomrim member on patrol in the area of Whyte Avenue and South 8th Street noticed a male acting suspiciously. The individual was seen with a firearm that appeared to be displayed in a threatening manner.
The Shomrim member followed the suspect from a distance while immediately notifying the NYPD’s 90th Precinct. Police units later intercepted the individual at Broadway and Havemeyer Street.
A search was conducted at the scene, and officers recovered a firearm. The suspect was taken into custody following a brief investigation, with assistance from Shomrim volunteers.
Williamsburg Shomrim coordinator Yanky Itzkowitz praised the swift response, saying, “A sharp-eyed observation by the member, combined with fast coordination with NYPD, resulted in a quick and successful arrest. This is what Shomrim partnership with police is all about.”
