G Line Gets Open Gangway Trains
By Y.M. Lowy
The G Line subway, running through Williamsburg, recently introduced its first open gangway train. This change is expected to ease overcrowding on the line’s shorter five-car trains. A gangway is a passage that connects subway cars. An open gangway design removes these doors, allowing passengers to walk the full length of the train.
The train cars bring several upgrades, including wider doors, brighter lighting, and digital screens displaying stop and transfer information.
The MTA has ordered 80 additional open gangway cars as part of a $1.3 billion subway fleet upgrade.
