Evasion of NYC Congestion Pricing Can Lead to Fines

By Y.M. Lowy

New York City’s implementation of congestion pricing has introduced a $9 toll for vehicles entering Manhattan below 60th Street during peak hours. However, some drivers have attempted to evade these fees by altering, covering, or using fraudulent license plates.

The New York Police Department has issued a stern warning against such practices. Attempts to enter the Congestion Relief Zone with altered, covered, or fraudulent plates can result in arrest or fines. Violations have been observed at locations such as 2nd Avenue and 60th Street, and 57th Street between 9th and 10th Avenues.

To combat toll evasion, the MTA has installed cameras at 110 locations around Manhattan. These cameras capture images of license plates and E-ZPass tags, identifying violators. The MTA has also warned against using products designed to obstruct license plates, stating that such actions could lead to fines and arrests.

The city has a zero-tolerance stance on toll evasion.
