DOT Approves New Traffic Signal for Dangerous Kent Avenue and South 10th Street Intersection

A long-awaited safety improvement is on the way for one of Williamsburg’s more dangerous intersections.

The New York City Department of Transportation has approved the installation of a new traffic signal at the corner of Kent Avenue and South 10th Street.

The approval follows extensive efforts by local askan R’ Leib Moskowitz, who worked to bring attention to the safety concerns and push for action at the location.

The approval begins a multi-stage process that includes surveying the intersection, designing the signal system, obtaining permits, coordinating with utility companies, and completing construction. The project will also include accessible pedestrian signals (APS) for pedestrians.

Because of the amount of engineering and underground work involved, installation of a new traffic signal typically takes at least six months, though the timeline can vary depending on the complexity of the intersection.
