Declutter Diaries: The Linen Closet

By Y.M. Lowy

Welcome back to another post in our home organizing series! This time, we’re tackling the linen closet. From towels to sheets and everything in between, it can quickly become a chaotic jumble. But with a little bit of planning, this closet can go from cluttered to organized in no time. Let’s dive in!

Organize This:

Store Rarely Used Items Out of Sight: Store your everyday towels and sheets on the center shelf. Everything else — mismatched pillowcases, bleach-stained towels, and your daughter's hot pink robe can be tucked in baskets on higher or lower shelves.

Invest in Storage Bins or Baskets: Use bins or baskets to keep similar items together. Keep extra towels in one basket, sheets in another, and any other linens in their own space. Labeling each container makes it easier to grab what you need without having to search.

Use Shelf Dividers: If your closet has shelves that tend to collapse under the weight of stacked linens, try using shelf dividers to create neat sections. This will prevent stacks of sheets from topping over and keep everything organized.

Fold Towels and Bedding Neatly: A little folding goes a long way! Neatly fold towels, sheets, and blankets into uniform sizes. You can even roll towels to save space and make it easier to see everything at a glance. Try an under-shelf organizer in your linen closet to hold rolled-up towels and linens.

Keep It Fresh: A linen closet is the perfect place to store air fresheners or drawer sachets. Keep your linens smelling fresh by adding an air freshener, like linen sachets or cedar balls, to the closet.

Did You Know?

The average American household has around 20 towels, but only uses a few at a time! With a little organization, you can keep all those extra towels easily accessible without crowding up your space.

Myth Busting:

Myth: Linen closets are only for linens.

Reality: Linen closets can be versatile storage spaces for other household items as well, like toiletries, extra toilet paper, and even cleaning supplies. With the right organization, you can make your linen closet work harder for you!

One Item Purge Challenge:

Take a look at the linens in your closet. Do you have any mismatched sheets, worn-out towels, or bedding you haven’t used in years? This week, I challenge you to purge one set of old linens that no longer serve a purpose. Let it go and make space for the things you use!
