Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez Will Not Seek Re-Election in 2026
Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez, who has represented New York’s 7th District—including Williamsburg, Bushwick, and parts of Queens—for over 30 years, announced today that she will not run for re-election in 2026.
Velázquez shared the news in a statement: “After much reflection, I have decided that this will be my last term… It is time for a new generation of leaders to step forward.” She expressed deep gratitude to New York City, the place that “took me in, welcomed me, and presented opportunities I never thought possible.”
Her departure opens the seat for the first time since 1992 and sets the stage for a competitive 2026 primary in one of the city’s most diverse districts.
Williamsburg 365 will keep you updated on potential candidates looking to represent this district.
